From the Authors
How can we help a child whose parent is no longer living due to illness, an accident, war, or some other reason? What can we do to ease the sadness when this happens? Well, one idea is to encourage the child to get to know a lot about the person’s life and what they liked to do. Memories collected and stories repeated acknowledge the uniqueness of each person and each relationship. Over time there is an understanding that, although the loss is irrevocable, the person who has died need not be forgotten. Ashlee was allowed to let her imagination run free, and in doing so she invented her own rituals to commemorate her father’s life. Through this process, and other ceremonies she decided to create from time to time, Ashlee has been able to follow a personal path of grief resolution. She has found special ways to honor the importance of this relationship throughout her own lifetime.
